Major Web Failure Hits Dozens Sites and Applications

A widespread web disruption has impacted many online platforms and apps around the world, as users reporting problems connecting to the web after problems at the online infrastructure service.

The affected services comprise the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, along with several Amazon-operated platforms including its key e-commerce website and the Ring device manufacturer.

Throughout Britain, Lloyds bank was affected in addition to its branches Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were further notifications of difficulties reaching the HM Revenue and Customs online portal on the start of the week. Furthermore across the UK, multiple Ring users used online platforms to report their doorbells were malfunctioning.

Solely in the United Kingdom, accounts of disruptions on particular platforms totaled the many thousands for every service.

The company stated that the outage started in the eastern region of the US at AWS, a unit that offers essential internet backbone for a host of companies, who utilize capacity on AWS infrastructure. Amazon Web Services is the biggest global web hosting platform.

Shortly after late night (PDT) in the US (8am BST), Amazon confirmed “increased error rates and latencies” for the cloud services in a zone on the eastern US of the America. The cascading impact was seen to hit platforms around the world, and the problem monitoring service reporting outages with the corresponding services in various regions.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a service that tracks web disruptions, further indicated a surge in outages on the start of the week, with many of them located in Virginia, the region of the eastern US data center where AWS said the problems began.
